With a mission rooted in over 50 years of improving health outcomes for women and communities in western Pennsylvania and beyond, Adagio Health, along with our master of ceremonies – KDKA Radio Host and Vice Chair of Adagio Health’s Board, Michael Bartley – will present the following awards:
Dr. Margaret Larkins-Pettigrew is an obstetrician-gynecologist, global health strategist, and veteran of the US Navy. She serves as a Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Allegheny Health Network and Highmark Health in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She also holds the position of Academic Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Larkins-Pettigrew is the founder of JUSTWONDOOR, a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating global medical providers and reducing maternal and infant mortality through international healthcare collaborations. She recently joined the Board of the Allegheny County Health Department.
Dr. Liz Miller is Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Public Health, and Clinical Translational Science at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, physician in Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine, and Medical Director of Community Health at UPMC Children’s Hospital Pittsburgh. She has over 20 years of practice and research experience in addressing gender-based violence prevention and adolescent health equity in clinical and community settings. Her clinical focus is serving youth who are system-involved. She has served on the advisory council for Adagio Health for a number of years.
State Representative Gina H. Curry, elected in 2021 to represent Pennsylvania’s 164th Legislative District, is a committed advocate for women’s health, with a focus on addressing maternal health disparities. Drawing on her background in education, behavioral health, and community leadership, Curry co-founded the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus in 2023 to confront the high maternal mortality rates affecting Black women in Pennsylvania. She has championed the MOMNIBUS legislation and works closely with partners to improve access to care and maternal health outcomes across the state. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to supporting women, children, and families through informed policy and community engagement.
State Representative La’Tasha D. Mayes (she/her) was elected to the Pennsylvania House in 2022, becoming the first woman to represent House District 24 and the first out lesbian to serve in the General Assembly. A West Philadelphia native and longtime Pittsburgh resident, Mayes is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. She is the founder and former President & CEO of New Voices for Reproductive Justice, where she spent 18 years advocating for the health and rights of Black women, femmes, girls, and gender-expansive people. Her public service includes roles on the Governor’s Advisory Commission on African American Affairs and the Allegheny County Human Relations Commission. Inspired by her mother—a single parent, Army veteran, and union member—Mayes has spent over two decades fighting for justice and equity in Pennsylvania.
State Representative Morgan Cephas, elected in 2016 to represent Pennsylvania’s 192nd Legislative District, is a strong advocate for women’s health and maternal care in the Commonwealth. A native of West Philadelphia, she has introduced and supported legislation to reduce maternal mortality, improve postpartum care, and ensure humane treatment for incarcerated women. As a former Co-Chair of the Women’s Health Caucus, she helped secure over $25 million in funding for statewide programs aimed at improving outcomes for mothers and infants. She has also brought over $21 million in funding to support schools, parks, businesses, and libraries in her district. Cephas currently serves as Majority Chair of the Government Oversight Committee and Secretary of the Housing and Community Development Committee. Her work reflects a longstanding dedication to improving healthcare and strengthening support for families across Pennsylvania.
After more than a decade of transformational leadership at Adagio Health, President and CEO BJ Leber has announced that she will step down from her role at the end of August 2025. Leber’s transition marks the close of a chapter defined by visionary growth and mission-driven impact. During her tenure, BJ led Adagio Health through a period of dynamic expansion which included: increasing the organization’s operational footprint; broadening programs and access for populations in need – including women veterans; expanding services to include adult preventive care, treatment for HIV and Hepatitis C, food cupboards and farmers markets; adding behavioral health and care navigation services; and instituting a progressive family leave policy for employees. Her leadership has positioned Adagio Health as a regional force for compassionate, accessible care. BJ will continue her civic engagement through ongoing roles on the board of Pittsburgh Water and the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Women. A passionate advocate for community health and well-being, her recent recognition with the Moe Coleman Award for Excellence in Community Service reflects her enduring commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive future for all. We are incredibly proud to honor BJ for her leadership and service to Adagio Health.
