In this country, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Later on, Black women are more likely than other racial and ethnic groups to die from cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, lupus, and several cancers.
We are all harmed by systemic racism.

"Let’s talk about what a thriving Black community really looks like. People have choices. If we want Pittsburgh to be a place where everybody thrives, we have to work toward that."
Muffy Mendoza has built a nation of impassioned moms as the Founder and CEO of Brown Mamas. Along that journey she has cultivated an array of expertise. Author, community developer and advocate, speaker and influencer, she is a highly adept entrepreneur and leader with a heart for the black mothering community. Her resume is a veritable list of who’s who including TEDx speaker, Essence Festival featured author, #63 on the Root 100s List of Most Influential African-Americans and Facebook Accelerator Program graduate.
Her work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Jennifer Hudson Show, New York Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, CBS News, Pittsburgh Magazine and more.
Starting as a small group of fired up, African-American mothers, meeting in each other’s homes, growing into an online and offline membership of over 6600 mothers of color, Muffy has built a powerful nation of impassioned change-makers. Along this journey she has crafted a curriculum for Black moms, The Brown Mama Mindset, and produced a national showcase that amplifies the voices of Black mothers nationally, The Brown Mama Monologues.
Through the Brown Mamas journey, Muffy has cultivated a variety of transferable skills that have prepared her to offer her acumen in social media dominance, public speaking, entrepreneurship mastery and principle development to the masses, whether they are mothers or not. Adeptly managing many roles, Muffy is also a fully engaged mother of three sons and happily married wife of one awesome husband. She resides in Pittsburgh, PA.
"Moms need to be HEARD. Overweight moms, Black moms, old moms, young moms -- health care providers need to listen."
An aboriginal indigenous Black woman, Brooklyn NY native and Pittsburgh PA implant, Iyanna Bridges' greatest privilege and honor is that of mother and spiritual guide to four dynamic, inquisitive and beautiful Black girls.
It is such an understatement to simply say Iyanna is passionate about birth work in the Black community. When she got pregnant and gave birth to her first three daughters, she unknowingly and unwilling put herself at risk of being a statistic. By the time she conceived her fourth daughter, she not only realized that she was worth significantly more than she had received in the past but she decided that her and her family deserved a far better experience and outcome. So she empowered herself and walked in her power with her fourth birthing experience and it was at that point, The Birthing Hut was conceived.
The Birthing Hut aims to provide an array of pre- & post-natal community support and services. As black birthing professionals, they educate their clients, provide evidence-based research to assist clients with making informed decisions and build up the mental and emotional confidence of moms so they can become advocates for themselves and their family. The Birthing Hut understands the drastic disproportion of maternal compassion for black women, which is why they prioritize the community but provide support and services for ALL women in need of pre and post-natal care.
